General Information on Ordering North Dakota Death Certificates

The Division of Vital Records provides registration and certification of the vital events that occur in North Dakota. These events include births, deaths, fetal deaths, marriages and divorces. They also provide statistical information on a wide range of categories relating to these events.

The Division of Vital Records currently has death certificate information on file from 1881 to the present year. All certified copies will be issued in paper format with a raised seal indicating authenticity. Once a request is received in our office, it is usually processed in 5-7 working days. This does not include return mail time! However, if you have indicated some type of expedited return mailing service (Federal Express or UPS) for your certificate, it will be processed faster. All requests must be in writing. They DO NOT accept telephone requests! Due to the large volume of requests, they cannot give expedited service to everyone. Only requests that are received by 10:00 a.m. Central Time by fax or some type of expedited mailing service (i.e. Federal Express, UPS, etc.) or are being returned to you by one of our expedited mailing services are guaranteed to be processed the same day the request was received.
