General Information on Ordering Maryland Death Certificates

The Division of Vital Records of the Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene issues certified copies of birth, death, fetal death, and marriage certificates for events that occur in Maryland.

The Division of Vital Records is open from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm, Monday through Friday, and the third Saturday of each month.

THE FOLLOWING PERSONS MAY APPLY:

  • Surviving relative of the deceased
  • Authorized representative of a surviving relative of the deceased
  • Funeral director who was in charge of the final disposition of the body of the deceased
  • Any individual who has a proven legal need Court of law

If application is made in person, certificates can be received the same day if a valid photo identification is provided. Requests by mail take approximately one to two weeks to complete.
